Pulmonate Land Snail Evolution and Diversity Sixth International Congress on Medical and Applied Malacology Invertebrate Reproduction and Development 14th
International Congress of Unitas Malacologica
Molluscs in the new Millenium: the future of molluscan studies and societies in the British Isles A joint all-day meeting with the Conchological Society, at the rooms of the Linnean Society, Burlington House, Piccadilly. A broad range of speakers will give their views on the future of malacology, and the role of the societies devoted to its study. It is hoped that topics will include developments in research, the role of museums, amateur collectors and recorders, the future of malacological publications, and the activities of both Conchological and Malacological Societies. This will be an important meeting, at a time when both taxon-based research and small taxon-based natural history societies are facing a challenging future. For information contact David Reid. Tel: 020 7942 505. Email: dgr...@nhm.ac.uk ). The Malacological Society of London Annual General Meeting will be held at lunch time during the above meeting. Pulmonate Land Snail Evolution and Diversity Linnean Society, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London A joint evening meeting of the Linnean Society and the Malacological Society of London. The meeting aims to show the impact of molecular studies on our ideas of pulmonate evolution and diversification at various taxonomic levels. 17.30 Tea 18.15 Peter Mordan (NHM, London) The Stylommatophora - before molecules 18.35 Christopher Wade (NHM, London) The stylommatophora - a molecular phylogeny 18.55 Sara Goodacre (University of Nottingham) Convergent evolution in the family Partulidae 19.15 Thierry Backeljau (Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels) A molecular eye on arionid slug relationships. 19.40 Wine reception. The International Society for Medical and Applied Malacology SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON MEDICAL AND APPLIED MALACOLOGY Havana, Cuba The Cuba congress promises to be as successful as the previous five, held in Mexico, Korea, Australia, Chile and Thailand. Cuba has been a paradise for malacologists for many years. There are more than 2500 land snail species, most of which are endemic, freshwater molluscs are also important elements of the islandís fauna, and the marine molluscan fauna , as in other places in the Caribbean, is rich and varied. As well as medical and applied aspects - conservation, agriculture, veterinary, parasitology toxicology and control, aquaculture, bioindicators - the Congress welcomes papers and posters on basic biology (e.g. biodiversity, comparative morphology, genetics, reproduction and development, ultrastructure). The climate is temperate (mean temperature 25oC, ca 78oF) year round. The entry visa can be obtained on arrival at Havana airport or at the Cuban embassy of other countries. The official language of the Congress will be English (preferred) and Spanish. Abstracts of papers and posters (no more than 300 words should be submitted by email to alfr...@ipk.sld.cu- before 15 April 2000. Registration fee is US$160 (students and accompanying persons US$60).
