On Paper, Screen or Live?

The Bulletin appears every six months, followed by the web version. Consequently, items which just miss one issue wait six months to appear. In future I hope to publish some of the contents on the internet ahead of the hard copy. There will be a problem fitting items that have appeared on the internet into paper pages, so some might be condensed or expanded.

Many journals are now accessed electronically from an office or computer suite, and visits to the library are necessary only to read books and older journals. Indeed, an increasing number of journals exist only on the internet and the required article is read on the screen or printed out. That should be good for many educational institutions unable to buy and look after large numbers of journals, but it relies on good internet facilities. Also, internet articles can often be easily copied by students to produce assignments that demonstrate only an ability to find information without necessarily understanding it or knowing its reliability. We will try to make it difficult to cut-and-paste, or obvious where it has been done.

The Bulletin includes reports of conferences. Although conferences are sometimes enhanced by electronic pre-conference exchanges, they are not being replaced. The reasons are reassuringly human. Conferences are organised to bring together people with different perspectives on a current issue, and are lively exchanges. Moreover, conferences offer the chance to visit new locations and perhaps escape the conflicting demands of remaining at base. The Society’s council is always pleased to hear from people with suggestions of topics for meetings.

Thank you every one who sent contributions for this issue. Please send contributions of comment, techniques, news, new books, conferences, pictures etc. for the next (August) issue to me by late July. Articles and abstracts should be simple and succinct, avoiding or explaining specialist terms. Where appropriate, please include a reference to a more detailed account, and an illustration.
