Thinking about some of the items in this issue, it occured to me that the requirements for good research rely as much on a receptive and imaginative mind as on access to good laboratory facilities. For instance, the effect of caffeine on the gastropod heart (see below) was observed by watching the heart through a transparent shell. But minds need stimulation, and scientific meetings are where this can be gained. Often, the ideas come from the fertile borders - hence the invitation to an Ent Soc meeting. Please support the meetings and suggest topics for future ones, so that The Society works for you. Also, spread the word to students and encourage them to attend.

Items for the next Bulletin (Number 40, February 2003) should reach me by mid-January. I also rely on you for articles, information about meetings, new publications, 'snippets' of news etc. Please keep articles simple and succinct, avoiding or explaining specialist terms, and include a reference to a more detailed account. Illustrations to accompany items are always needed. Remember that the Web version uses colour illustrations.
