Recording Schemes and Biodiversity Analyses

National Museums and Galleries of Wales, Cardiff

A series of speakers will be leading a meeting discussing marine, freshwater and terrestrial field research programmes investigating biodiversity. Some challenging issues for the future understanding of molluscan biodiversity are:

  • How do we (whether amateur or professional) record molluscs to give estimations of molluscan biodiversity?
  • What do the biodiversity indices derived from this data mean?
  • How do we collect ecological data for integration into such an analysis?
  • Can we track changing trends through time (old census data and its use today)? Is there a value to going back to sites recorded 25, 50, 75, 100 years ago?
  • What can we derive from collectors' diaries and anecdotal information?

The range of presentations at this meeting will help to explore these issues and provide a forum for discussion of future work. Confirmed speakers include:

Terrestrial Habitats:

  • Frederic Magnin (Marseille) French grassland faunas
  • Alex Menez (Gibraltar) Southern Spain coastal habitats
  • Robert Cameron (NHM) How reliable are our estimates of species richness?
  • Fred Naggs (NHM) Sri Lankan land snails
  • Paul Davies (Bath) Scale issues and sampling - data from woodlands and wetlands
  • Seddon, Herbert and Tattersfield, Use of diversity indices, Natal, S. Africa
  • Beata Pokryszko (Wroclaw)

Freshwater Habitats:

  • David Aldridge (Cambridge) freshwater sampling and representativeness

Marine:

  • Andy Mackie Irish Sea benthic sampling
  • Ian Killeen and Jan Light, Rodrigues: weed sampling and onshore work

The venue for the meeting is the National Museum & Galleries of Wales Icons Suite (60-80 people) which will also accommodate some posters at the side of the room for individual presentations on the status of county atlases or thoughts on future recording efforts in the UK and abroad.

A full programme including a list of speakers, provisional timetable and local Hotel/Guest House accommodation will be on The Society's website.
