The Annual Award

The Annual Award was instituted in 1976, to be awarded to a person who, in the opinion of The Society's adjudicators, has made an exceptionally promising initial contribution to the study of molluscs. Such a contribution should match the quality and quantity of work contained in an excellent PhD thesis, but may consist of a set of published papers.

The Award consists of a cash prize of £100, a certificate, and two year's membership of The Society. Where the winner is already a member, two year's dues will be remitted.

Nominations, accompanied by a copy of the work to be assessed, can be made by any member of The Society, and must reach the Hon. Secretary by 31st December in each year. Note that candidates themselves do not have to be members to be considered.

Submissions are considered by a panel of three adjudicators, and the results are announced at The Society's AGM the following year. An extended abstract in English should be provided alongside work in other languages, and the adjudicators may, at their discretion, request expert advice from others fluent in the language involved.

The Sir Charles Maurice Yonge Award

This Award, established in 1983, was originally presented each year to the authors of a paper of outstanding merit on Bivalvia in the Journal of Molluscan Studies. With the assistance of a generous donation, this Award, while continuing to support work on the Bivalvia, will now be made as follow:

(a) As a bursary to support student attendance at a conference or workshop, or

(b) As a prize for an outstanding student presentation at a meeting, or

(c) Exceptionally, as a prize for an outstanding paper in the Journal of Molluscan Studies by a person starting their career.

The Award will have a value of up to £150 for any one holder. Council may, at its discretion, make more than one award in any one year.

The designated purpose of the Award for each year will be announced in the February Bulletin of The Society, and simultaneously on its website, with details for application, and a closing date for submissions. In years when a UNITAS congress is held, the Award is likely to be used to support student participation there. Applicants need not be members of The Society.

Robert Cameron, President
