The late Alistair Graham

It is with regret that we report the death of former President and Editor of the Journal, Alistair Graham. Our condolences go to his widow, Dr Elizabeth Andrews. An obituary will appear in the next issue.

Dr Rudolf (Ruedi) Stohler 1901 - 2000

The October 2000 issue of The Veliger (Volume 43, No. 4) reports the death of its Founding Editor on 24 April 2000. The memorial issue gives a brief resumé of Stohler's life together with some personal remembrances by Hans Bertsch.

Dr Stohler was a founder member of the Northern California Malacozoological Club and became Editor of the club's newsletter, The Veliger, in 1958. He was Editor for 25 years during which time the journal grew in stature. A tribute to Dr Stohler's work appeared in The Veliger (1983, Volume 26, No. 1) and included a photo of the Editor at his linotype machine which he used in the production of The Veliger.

I first met Ruedi at the Unitas meeting in Vienna in 1968. 1 had recently taken out a subscription to The Veliger and he introduced himself to me. There can't be many Editors who can remember their subscribers and seek them out! I will remember him for his kindness and his encouragement to those at the start of their research careers.

More details of this remarkable man can be found at http://ucmp/berkeley.edu/people/veliger/Stohler.htm

Member's E-mail addresses

The Society sometimes needs to inform members about events between issues of the Bulletin. The information will be on our website, but we canít draw your attention to it. So we have to write to you. It would be cheaper and faster to use email than the normal postal services, so please email Mark Davies, the membership secretary: mark...@sunderland.ac.uk - if we can communicate this way.

Slugs Poster

The March issue of BBC Wildlife magazine will include a poster of slugs illustrated by Cheshire Wildlife Artist and illustrator, Chris Shields.

UNITAS 2004

This meeting will be held in Perth, not Japan.

Members' access to UCL Library

University College London library has informed the Membership Secretary that members of The Society are entitled to join and borrow books from UCL library. Any member wishing to register with UCL library should communicate with Mark Davies, so that he can provide proof of membership.

The arrangement is connected to Percy E Radley's bequest of his library to The Society in 1929. The books are located in University College Library. Information on the Radley library is on The Society's website - click on "library".

The Spirit of Arthur Cain

The meeting on Pulmonate Land Snail Evolution and Diversity was interesting. So anatomy of excretory systems holds up well as a major character set for systematic purposes. But what do these organs do, and how does the arrangement affect their function? If there is a functional difference between different dispositions, how does that affect our assessment of relationships? I could feel the spirit of Arthur Cain tut-tutting above us and threatening yet again to resign from the Linnean Society.
