As many Members will know, over the last few months I have been updating The Society's membership records and shortly I will be writing to all members to make sure that the contact details The Society has are correct. I have written to many members and I want to thank them for their forbearance over this transitional period while I have been finding my feet as new Membership Secretary. To save postage costs The Society would like to use Email to contact members: if you have an Email address please let me know. If you do not, The Society is, of course, happy to correspond by 'normal' mail. I have received many supportive letters, among them one from a past Treasurer of The Society, CP Nuttall, which I quote with his permission.

"In my day we used to bank at Lloyds in St James's Street, WI. I had to visit it once to pay in some money during a postal strike. They all wanted to know what malacology was about. A very grand bank with 'gentlemen's' clubs Whites and Boodles close by, and the Conservatives club on the other side of the road, and Locke's where anyone who wasanyone would go to buy their top hat. I can't be certain but I think the subscription was two guineas. This would have bought 25 pints of bitter at 1/8d per pint - i.e. much more than today's subscription."
