This project is inviting information from naturalists on the many ways in which the wild animal life of Britain is interwoven with human culture, history and folklore and it is to cover all parts of the animal kingdom. It would be good to have the molluscs well represented.

They are seeking information on

  • Customs, festivals and traditions that mark particular types of animals. Use of some part of an animal.
  • Individual animals or groups which have achieved fame and perhaps have inspired national literature, music or poetry.
  • Place names related to animals (The late A E Ellis published lists of mollusc-related place names in the Conchologist's Newsletter and these will be copied and sent in).
  • Is an animal named after a place?
  • Animals on coats of arms
  • Regional place names for animals.

Results will be published in a book by Professor Stefan Buczacki. Every organisation involved will be named in the book, so molluscs need to be there. The Bulletin editor would also appreciate a copy for possible publication.

The contact address is: Fauna of Britain Project, P O Box 392, Twickenham, Middlesex TW1 1XQ.
It also has a web site: www.hamlyn.co.uk/fauna. If you send in records, do identify yourself as a Malacological Society of London Member.
