Proposed Changes To The Rules

A Special General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 25 March 1998 in the University of Sunderland, at 1 p.m., immediately before the SGM to consider increase in subscription rate and the AnnualGeneral Meeting. The only item on the Agenda will be to consider the following changes in the Rules of The Society which were originally adopted on 17 May 1978 and were printed in the Bulletin of the Malacological Society of London, No 29, August 1997, page 5.

Proposed changes:

Under II. OBJECTS

(a) delete "presented thereto"

(e) relabel as (f) and insert new "(e) To award research grants to individuals which will advance the study of molluscan biology."

Under III. MEMBERSHIP

(c) insert after Studies and "the Bulletin of the Malacological Society of London with"

Under IV. MANAGEMENT

Replace 2nd sentence "The Council shall comprise the Honorary Officers (President, Treasurer, Secretary, Editor of the Journal, Editor of the Bulletin, Archivist), the immediate Past-President (ex officio for one year), two Vice-Presidents and six Ordinary Members."

In 3rd sentence change "two" to "four" Replace 2nd Paragraph "Vice-Presidents and Ordinary Members of Council are elected for three years and shall not be eligible for re-election in their respective offices for one year; the Officers of The Society shall be eligible for re-election each year, but the President shall normally serve for three years and upon retirement shall serve as a Vice-President (ex officio) for one year." 3rd paragraph delete "Editor and Publicity Officer," and insert "Editor of the Journal, Editor of the Bulletin and Archivist," and add to the last sentence "which shall be sent to every member of The Society not less than fourteen days before the Meeting."

Under V. FINANCE

delete (d) "The price....time." and add new (d)"The Council shall revise and publicise the conditions for The Society's awards and grants from time to time."

(e) delete all after "declared vested in" and add "Council as The Society's Trustees."

Under VI. MEETINGS

delete (a) and insert new "(a) Council shall each year organise a programme of Ordinary Meetings of The Society, which may include meetings held in association with similar institutions."

(b) delete "in March/April" and insert "at some time during the period February to April."

(c) In second sentence change "seven days" to "fourteen days" and after "before such meeting" insert "or announced in the Bulletin."
