GENTLEMEN
AND PLAYERS:
PROFESSIONALS
AND AMATEURS IN MALACOLOGY, 1900 - 1950
As
a follow-up to the "Malacological Pioneers" meeting in October 1994,
The Malacological Society of London has organised a second all-day meeting
in the rooms of the Linnean Society, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London.
The theme will examine the gradual professionalisation of malacology
and changing role of the amateur during the early part of this century.
The invited speakers include: David Allen, Robert Cameron, Laurence
Cook, Nick Evans, Ian Killeen, John Messenger, Brian Morton, Jim Murray
and Graham Oliver.
The
meeting will be co-hosted by the Conchological Society of Great Britain
and Ireland, the Linnean Society of London and The Society for the History
of Natural History. It is planned to start the meeting with coffee at
10 a.m. and to follow it with a wine reception, ending with an informal
dinner.
